An advent calendar to take you across South America

Introduction

It's that time of year again! Christmas is just around the corner, and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)'s lectors from South America want to take you around the many Christmas traditions they've learned about. In pandemic times, what better way to do so than through an online advent calendar? The DAAD South-America lectors contacted me to setup a website that would be just like a real-life advent calendar, with one door opening each day. The website needed to have support for comments on each day as well. Do you think I delivered? Let's find out!

Rethinking advent calendars

When DAAD approached me, it was with an open concept: "we have lectors across South America, we have this much budget, and we want a way to share traditions online". And also a short deadline: we had just one month to come up with the final idea, gather the content from every lector and set up the technicalities of the website. The website was setup so each day would enable visitors to see a new video, depicting a Christmas tradition from a South-American country. From Brazil, to Nicaragua, to Costa Rica, visitors could check out how Christmas is celebrated around the world.
